Artisan Wood Floors was called in to repair and refinish this vertical grain fir floor in Mt. Airy. The home which was built in the early 1900’s had been abandoned for a number of years and suffered much water penetration damage. Many of the structural elements needed to be repaired and to that end, a carpenter was called in to support the joists with steel I-beams. We were asked to replace many of the floor boards and to shore up some of the structural repair work. We also used an epoxy resin the repair large gaps that didn’t warrant an actual board replacement. After the repair work was completed, we moved on to the refinishing.

The floors were sanded 4 times and because the homeowner wanted the floor to match the existing wood work on the stairs and walls, we suggested staining them. We applied 3 color samples of various Bona stains directly to the sanded floors and the homeowners selected Spice Brown for their color. We generally apply our stains with a buffer, but due to the age of the floors, we were concerned that a buffer might damage the flooring. Instead, we applied the stain by hand, wiping it on with rags and then removed the excess stain by wiping it off with rags. We allowed it to dry for 24 hours and applied a sealer coat of Bona Intense Seal, a quick drying low VOC sealer. We then applied 2 coats of Bona Mega One finish in a satin sheen. Mega One is a low VOC Green Guard certified product with great dry times, exceptional chemical resistance and excellent durability.
